Autograph Document Signed, "G.M. Miller Col. ORR SCV," by George McDuffie Miller (1830-1899) Captain of the 1st South Carolina Rifles, July 20, 1861. Promoted to Colonel April 7, 1864. He was wounded at Chancellorsville, and was taken POW o April 3, 1865. He was later a prominent official of the UCV. The pass, 1p. oblong 2-1/2"x8", September 25, 1864, and reads in full: "Sergt. Major Hemphill has permission to attend Church in the City..." Docketed with approval on verso. Dampstains, else Good and a rare Orr's Rifles signature.The 1st South Carolina Regiment Rifles also known as Orr’s Rifles, were recruited in July, 1861. They fought hard with the Army of Northern Virginia and would report a 59% casualty rate at Gaine’s Mill, 49% at Chancellorsville, and substantial losses at Fredericksburg, 2nd Manassas, and at the Wilderness.
