Autograph Letter Signed, 4p. quarto, April 19, 1861, somewhere in Virginia, and reads in part: “...She told me you ‘all in teh Union looked upon the Southern Confederacy as a mere shadow, and in a short time would blot it out of existence.’ I was reading that part at the same time could hear the cannon firing and every one in the town rejoicing because they had just heard the good news, Virignia has joined the S.C. What do you all think of it? It is of no use to get sad and think it hard to leave the Union, for that was broken when the first state, S. Carolina left it; and you haven’t any Union to hold to, it is North and South now, and never will be anything else...Everyone here seemed as glad when they heard Va. was out as they did when Florida seceeded. Don’t it seem strange that ‘Nobody was hurt’ when Sumter was taken... Ithink that shows it was alright in taking it...” More. VG.
