Scarce South Carolina Naval Document Signed, “James H. North Capt. Comd” 1p. folio, issued from the South Carolina Naval Head Quarters, listing the “Officers S.C. Navy” being a retained copy of the official transmittal to Governor Pickens, it records the names, entry date into the South Carolina Navy (all either January or February of 1861) , their rank, their original U.S. Navy entry date, their rank from which they resigned and any remarks, of the twenty-six (26) naval officers. On an integral leaf it also lists the “Officers & Crew” of the Schooner Petrel, Schooner Aiken, Schooner Ellen, and the Schooner Howell Cobb.” Fine.To protect its coast and its coastal forts South Carolina under orders by Governor Pickens seized several Federal vessels of which the Aiken and Petrel were two. With these vessels, South Carolina for the second time in her history, constructed her own Navy. The South Carolina ship Aiken, named in this document, was reported by Captain Woods, who commanded the troops on the Star of the West, to be in tow while when that ship was thwarted from reinforcing Fort Sumter.
