War-date Confederate Autograph Letter Signed, “P.H. Behr” 1p. octavo, Savannah, Georgia, July 27, 1861, with provisional cover bearing Savannah cds, addressed to Mrs. E.I. Baldy in Griffin, Georgia, it reads in part: “...Sent you a paper on Wednesday showing Stephen was safe, previous to that date. I sent on by three different men, going to Manassass to inquire for him. We cannot place implied reliance upon reports however. Since than the papers report him wounded, he is not killed & may not be wounded. I think there can be no doubt he is all right. It was a glorious victory & hope we will be able to treat them in same way every time...am sure of having a correct acct. from the section who hve gone thus...” Fine. Arguably the most celebrated regiment fielded by Arkansas during the Civil War, the Third Regiment, Arkansas Volunteers, served in Virginia from its inception to its surrender at Appomattox Court House. The Third Arkansas was one of a handful of Arkansas regiments that maintained their organizational integrity throughout the war, and generally enjoyed competent, stable leadership. For most of its service, it was an integral part of the famous Texas Brigade, “Lee’s Grenadier Guard,” of the Army of Northern Virginia. During its four years of war 1,353 men served in the Third Arkansas. Only 150 remained at the surrender. Stephen S. Baldy served as a member of the ‘Confederate Stars’ of Company C, 3rd Arkansas Infantry, and died before October 1862.
