War-date Confederate soldier Autograph Letter Signed, “B. Hylton” 24th Virginia Infantry, 2p. octavo, Culpepper Court House, July 11, 1861, addressed to Capt Stiggleman, and reads in part: “...I arrived at this place this morning & went tot he surgeons office & searched the sick list and soon found the names of the boys they are in Methodist Church. I found Billy & Harvey in the corner near the pulpit. They have a very good bed near each other. Billy is improving slowly he has a bad rsiing on right ear the Doct. said he would ope it thisevening but has postponed it till morning. He says Billy will not be fit for duty for some month or so & says he thinks he will give him a furlough in the morning to go home. ...Harvey after getting over measels was taken wih diarheah & has been very bad off, but is recovering...Slusher is very well & is the steward of the hospital & looks well & hearty. The sick at this place is well cared for & very comfortable...The Ladies seem to be very kind to themin keeping the fleas away & waiting on them with every thing for their comforts. Such kindness can never be repaid...you need not fear to send the sick with measels to this place the Doctors very kind the servants attentive...” VG.
