Autograph Document Signed, “James G. Harris Capt. Co. H, 7th Reg. N.C.T.” WIA at Jone’s Farm, Virginia on September 30, 1864, after being shot through the groin and left buttock, 1p. small quarto, being a “Provision Return for Capt. harris Compnay (H) 7th Reg’t N.C. Troops for Seven days commencing February 4th and ending February 10th 1862.” Fine. In the battle of Chancellorsville he was in command of his company on the extreme right of his regiment, in line of battle behind log breastworks from which the enemy had been driven. In the darkness of evening a Federal brigade came up and Harris demanded to know who they were. On the reply, "We are Federals; speak or we will fire into you." Lieutenant Campbell, of Company C, responded, "Fire then; there's more of us than you can shoot." The Federals then proposed to surrender, and while negotiations were going on, the men intensely excited, fearing treachery and not being able to see more than ten feet ahead, a party of horsemen was heard coming along in the front. Some one in Lane's brigade fired, and a volley followed. On the next morning they learned to their great sorrow and dismay that the horsemen were Jackson and his staff, and that he had been fatally wounded.
