A great war-date Robert E. Lee staff officer's letter written in ink by Capt. Albert L. Land, 41st Va., 2pp. folio, Culpeper C. H., [Va.], Nov. 13, 1862 to his military friend officer "Shelton" concerning staff duty and his near capture, in part: "…I had been to Col. Chambliss camp to get his signature to the wood requisition & also an order to furnish wood & lumber for the troops while on Dunds hill. I never recd any invoice of the wood or lumber. My requisition was for the timber cord wood & Capt. Branch only furnished me one & a half cords or three perhaps. I don't remember how much plank was furnished that you can ascertain from Capt. Branch. I'll have to make out a certificate that the wood & lumber was furnished which will be used as a voucher…Sharp & Buckwheat are quite well, they have been drawing the Gens wagons since he has been with us. Capt. Rose is still under arrest, the boys generally are looking well. I saw Col. Chambliss yesterday he and his command were quite well. They are now without tents they having been sent to Gordonsville a few days ago expecting the army to fall back. We have been under marching orders all this week but now I think the prospect to remain here sometime is very good. I sent Doug to Richmond Monday after shoes for the Brigd he got 34 prs only. I understand however that several thousand prs. have been sent up in the past few days by government. I wrote to mother last Monday that I came very near being captured by the Yankees last Thursday, that very cold snowy day but I avoided them by hard whipping & fast running. Their ammunition was not very good that day either. Drury has sent Longstreet (the sorrel) to bro. Robert…". Albert Lewis Land enlisted as a second lieutenant in company A 41st Virginia Infantry and was quickly appointed assistant quartermaster. By 1862 he served on the brigade staffs of Col. Chambliss and General Mahone and by the end of 1862 is listed as being on Robert E. Lee's staff. VG.
