War-date Confederate Manuscript Document Signed “Official R.M. Hooe A.A.Genl.” on the behalf of Major General T.C. Tupper, 1p. folio, Head Quarters Mississippi State Troops, Major General’s Office, Canton, June 14, 1862, being Special Orders No. 5, and reads “The Commanders of Regiments and seperate Battalions in the First Brigade Dvision composed of teh counties of DeSoto, Marshall, Tippah, Tishomingo, Itawamba, Pontotoc, Lafayette, Panola, Tunica, and Coahoma, will direct their respective command of organized Minute Men to obey such orders as may here after eminated from Brigadier General Ruggles of the Confederate States Army, for the destruction of cotton, for the preservation or removal of other property, and for the protection of laborers engaged in the service of the Confederate States. It is further ordered that such minute men while engaged in obedience to the orders of Brig. Genl. Ruggles shall be considered as in ‘active service.’ Brigadier General M.F. Berry, and in his absence, the commanders of Regiments & Battalions of his Brigade are charged with the execution of this order...” VG.
