A rare war-date MWIA Confederate soldier's letter, 2p. quarto, written in pencil by Pvt. Columbus A. Barber, Co. K, 3rd Georgia Infantry, "Camp on Chas. City Road, Near Richmond, [Va.], July 3, 1862", and reads in part: "…I am glad to tell you that through the kind providence of God, Asa [Pvt. Asa A. Winn] was permitted to come off the battle field of the 1st instant without a scratch…he also asked me to tell you that Wm. [most likely Capt. William A. Winn, Cobb's Legion] was not in the fight, I know it will give you great satisfaction to know that both of your sons are safe….I am very much attached to them and especially to Asa as we are sworn friends and have messed together ever since we have been in the service…Enclosed you will find an envelope captured by Asa from the Yankees…The heavy rain of yesterday having stopped for the present, all military operations. Several in our company slight wounded and two killed, Jo McCliskey and Barlow Griffith…". Also included is the original Union patriotic cover "captured" from the Yankees at the battle of Malvern Hill. This cover has a nicely tinted satirical cachet, is addressed to Philadelphia while still having its original stamp affixed to the upper right hand corner…PLUS; the original transmittal cover addressed to Pvt. Asa A. Winn's father. Barber was WIA at Spotsylvania Court House on May 14, 1864 and Died of Wounds at Richmond on June 15, 1864, his body now resides in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. VG.
