Confederate manual “Rifle and Infantry Tactics, Revised and Improved by Maj. Gen. W.J. Hardee, C.S. Army.” Eight Edition. Vol. II. School of the Battalion. Mobile, Alabama, S. H. Goetzel, 1863, 232p. 12mo. , heavily illustrated, with ink signature of a member of the 1st Missouri Cavalry “J.R. McQuilken 1st Mo. Cavy.” with inscription “Picked up on Southern Battle fields, 1863.” VG.Sergeant James R. McQuilkin served with Company ‘E’ of the 1st Missouri Cavalry. The 1st Missouri Cavalry Regiment was formed during the summer of 1861. After fighting at Iuka and Corinth, it was assigned to M.E. Green’s Brigade, Department of Mississippi, and East Louisiana. It took an active part in the fight at Big Black River Bridge, and on July 4, 1863, was captured at Vicksburg. After the exchange it was assigned to General Cockrell’s Brigade, and consolidated with the 3rd Missiouri Cavalry Battalion. It fought with the Army of Tennessee throughout the Atlanta Campaign and was part of Hood’s operations in Tennessee. Later it was involved in the defense of Mobile. Aftering suffering losses throughout the war the small command surrenderd with the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana.
