Autograph Letter Signed, “A.E. Wilson” 4p. octavo, April 18, 1864, Camp near Greenville, and reads in part: “...we have just got back from Washington we was down there about three weeks and it all down now good. They shelled the gunboats all the time but they could not keep them back. They did intend to burn the place but they would not send the women and children of the town. But if I had it my power it would have [been] in ashes. Before this time they do all the mischief they can, they come out a long the bank of the river and burned some houses. They sent a great many shell and shot at us but they done but little damage. Jessy Walker go his hand hit by a piece of shell but it was slightly. Lt. Morrison and Capt Parker and me the drummager went out on a picket and they was all three killed or taken prisoner. We never have heard what went with them, we lay under there shells about twelve hours...We have hard times marching so much some times we go all night and split the mud and water as we go some time to the knees and sometimes to the waist...” More.
