War-date Confederate soldier's letter written by Sgt. Leonard Williams, Hampton Legion, South Carolina Cavalry, 4p. quarto, pencil, Camp Connor, Virginia, October 10, 1861, and reads in part: "…Henry writes to me that Steve is a bad & [a] worthless boy & I expect he has given you a great deal of trouble. When you go to Charleston, it will not do to let him stay at home. I believe I will have him sent to Wm. Mitts or Robert to keep a year just to learn him how to plow & make him work. They will put the curb on him…I do not know what to do with Nan, probably it would be as well to send her also with Steve to learn her to work. Fanny & Bill & Clough can stay at home & try to take care of the place & the cows…I will try to make arrangements to get Steve & Nan off. It would not do to leave either one of them at home. I would like also to get rid of the Brindle cow, it will be expensive to feed her during the winter…Alexander McBee writes to me that there is no bacon in Greenville & that it is very high. I think you had better get Mr. Whitmire to sell it saving only enough to do them at home till 1st Jan & keep the money to buy hogs with…I have no doubt Henry & Joseph Whitmire will cheerfully give the place & the negroes some attentions but if the state is invaded this winter I think Greenville will be the safest place for you all…" VG.
