War-date Confederate Autograph Letter Signed, “J.L. Black Col. Comdg.” 1p. oblong quarto, Headquarters East Lines, James Island, May 27, 1864, on verso of a retained copy of a letter by John Niernsee to Governor Bonham requesting a map for Colonel Black, Black writes “Respectfully returned to the Executive Office, Maj. Niernesee seems to be mistaken as to the character of the map required. It should show Roads Rivers or Creeks & mountain ranges. Gen. Jones Comdg. Dept. S.C. Geo. & Florida very much desires a map of this mountain country & it is desirable that the state authorites should place one at his disposal if not two copies one for the War Dept. but this two months hence would be of no use. Being a topographical draughtsman myself I can’t conceive that more than a few days at the outside would be required to execute a copy of the map desired. I would suggest that a map traced on transparent paper from the original would answer all present purposes. The retreat of Gen. Johnston is rapidly laying open this country and its topography should be well known at once as it may soon be penetrated by the enemy...” Fine.
