GIST, States Rights (1831 - 1864) Confederate brigadier general who commanded a division at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge, led his own brigade in the Atlanta campaign, killed in action leading his men at Franklin. Letter Signed, “By order of the Gov. S.R. Gist Adj & Insp Genl. of S.C.” 1p. quarto, on “State of South Carolina, Head Quarters.” October 19, 1864, addressed to “Captain Thomas Arsenal Keeper” at Columbia, and reads “You will cancel the bonds for sabres given by Captain Hammond and R.G. Lamar [Quartermaster 19th S.C. Infantry], and take the bond of Captain J.D. Twiggs [1st South Carolina Cavalry] and T.W. Watley in exchange therefore...” Fine.
