War Date Confederate Autograph Letter Signed, “DH Thomas Capt & AQM” who was taken POW at Vicksburg and held until January 1864, 2p. quarto, on rare “Headquarters Trans-Mississippi District” lettersheet, Office Asst. Qtr Master, Army of the West, Verona, Mississippi, June 24, 1862, addressed to Major W.E. Dyer, and reads in part: “...There are beginning to be made upon me some urgent demands for Forage to which I cannot respond...I take the liberty of suggesting that an Agent be sent down the Road, with funds & authority to pruchase and send to us. I have been assured by Capt. Kennedy that he had plenty of forage if he could have the switches cleared of the Ordnance & Subsistence Stores so that he could obtain places to stand cars to load with corn. This latter I suppose can only be effected by the authority of the several commanding. At present I have not sufficient help at my command to do anything at procuring supplies nor have I forage to feed the only two animals I have in service. If I cannot get forage in the morning from Depot Qtr Master sufficient for them temporarily I shall be compelled to hunt a pasture for them and shall then be entirely on foot. Mr Partee in charge of Subsistence Stores says that if nothing better could be done for him that even 2 wagons of only 2 horsepower each would be a great assistance. I have but an exceedingly small amount of funds on hand and would suggest the propriety of approving no a/cs for payment but those of Discharged Soldiers...” Fold split repairs, else Good.
