WINDER, JOHN H.(1800 - 1865) Confederate brigadier general and commander of the Confederate Libby Prison, Belle Isle and the notorious prison at Andersonville. He escaped the hangman, dying just before war's end. War-date A.E.S. signed with initials penned at the conclusion of a note from Levin A. Dix in reference to a passport requested, 1 p. 16mo., [n.p. but likely Richmond, n.d.], in full: "Passport to Am. Horton Matthre County JHW".
