MAURY, John Minor (1825-1868) Son of Richard B. Maury. Became the ward of his father's cousin, the renowned Virginian, Matthew Fontaine Maury, on the death of his father in 1838. Worked with his famous guardian's torpedo effort at the beginning of the war. Served with an artillery unit and in the Confederate navy until his capture at Fort Harrison on September 29, 1864. War-date Confederate prisoner Autograph Letter Signed, “Jno. M. Maury Lt. Col. CSA Prisoner of War” 1p. quarto, Officers Barracks Ford Delaware, Division 26, March 1, 1865, with fine cover bearing Delaware City cds, and reads in part: “...My name is down on the roll for the next boat, which may be here on any day, and so I am in high hope of soon seeing our dear old state again. You ask how it is that I have not a little wife there to welcome me. Well I don’t know exactly how it is, but it is even so, and as the gray hairs are begining to show I’m afraid it is too late to mind, my ways in particular. However, I intend to try when the war is over to become a respectable member of society which only a married man can be. If I haven’t got one to welcome me there however, I haven’t got one to maurn me here and that’s a comfort anyhow...” Fine.
