During the battle of Sharpsburg he was so severely wounded in the head that only a bullet hole in his hat prevented his drowning in his own blood. Partly-printed Document Signed “JB. Gordon” as Governor, 1p. oblong quarto, January 19, 1889, Atlanta, Georgia, confirming a commission for S.J. Chesnut as a Justice of the Peace. Fine.
