CRITTENDEN, John J. (1787-1863) Kentucky lawyer and politician, he served as U.S Senator, U.S. Attorney General. He was a Unionist and fought to keep Kentucky from seceding though he opposed the confiscation acts and the Emancipation Proclamation. Partly-printed Document Signed, "J.J. Crittenden", as Governor of Kentucky, 1p. folio, January 10, 1859, “IN the Name and by the Authority of the Commonwealth of Kentucky” he appoints Joseph Turner a Justice of the Peace. With nice large state seal at top center. VG.
