Autograph Letter Signed, 3p. quarto, December 22, 1861, from an Uncle to his fresh recruit nephew, it reads in part: "...I was in hopes you would take our advice and not go at all. You know I told you that after you were mustered into the U.S. Service your mother could do nothing for you...I am exceedingly sorry you cannot get a discharge, but as it is I hope you will keep a stiff upper lip and put it through like a man...Don't drink or smoke and try your best to make friends of your officers; be kind and gentlemanly to all and if you study the Art of War and learn it well and get promoted it may be the means of making your fortune - for War is going to be the occupation of the country..."
