Document signed, “J.H.Lane,” (1814-1866, Kansas Senator), 10” x 16,” preprinted and filled out in manuscript, silked, yellowed. Headquarters Frontier Guard, Washington City, April 27, 1861, printed letter exchange between James Lane, Captain Frontier Guard and Simon Cameron, Secretary of War, in which Lane requests authority to disband the guard, and in response Cameron acknowledges the emergency has passed therefore concurs. Printed signatures of A. Lincoln, Simon Cameron and J.H. Lane. The lower third of the document is an Honorable Discharge for H.M. DuPrey, May 3rd, 1861 and is inked signed by Lane. After the fall of Ft. Sumter, rumors spread through Washington that the city was to be attacked, the government buildings and offices taken over by the Southerners, and the President would be captured and held prisoner. Extraordinary measures were necessary. At the commencement of the Civil war James Lane was instrumental in raising a company known as the "Frontier Guard," which was the first military organization to reach Washington. Because the Frontier Guard was a voluntary and unofficial organization, serving without pay, they were not mustered into regular army service and their names were never placed on the army rolls.
