A good early war-date Union soldier's letter written by Pvt. Frederick Lyman, Co. E, 14th New York Volunteers, 4pp. 8vo., ink, on Washington Capitol stationery, Miner's Hill, Va., Oct. 23, 1861, in part: "…you must know that soldiering is lazy business. Since I wrote you last we have moved two miles further towards 'Secesh' we are about half way between Lewinsville on our right and Falls Church on our left. There is two batteries with our brigade, Carlisles and the 4th Rhode Island. One day last week they throwed 25 or 30 shells at the rebels on a hill 4 or 5 miles off since then there has not been any in sight. The 4th Rhode Island Battery has six of James Rifled cannon all brass pieces. [They are] the best Battery I ever saw. Since we have been here they have built an observatory 51 feet high and put up a Telegraph from here to the War Department…yesterday we all got a new cap and the letter E and the figures 14…silver plated… ".
