HINCKS, Edward W. (1830-1894) Colonel of the 8th and 19th Massachusetts, rose to rank of brigadier-general. WIA at Glendale and Antietam.War-date Union Document Signed, “Edw. W. Hinks” as Colonel 8th Regt. Mass Vols., 1p. quarto,May 23, 1861, St. Dennis, Maryland, and reads in part: “...The bearer hereof, William W. Warren, a private of Captain F.E. Porter’s company, Eighth regiment of Infantry, aged forty-two (42) years, five (5) feet, five (5) inches high,...enlisted at Wshington in the District of Columbia...is hereby permitted to go to Beverly...State of Massachusetts, he having received a Furlough from the twenty third (23d) day of May, to the sixth day of June (1861) at which period he will rejoin his company or regiment at St. Dennis, Md or wherever it then may be, or be considered a deserter...” VG.
