A good early war-date Northern home front letter, 2pp. 4to., by a certain "Hannah", Brooklyn, April 30, 1861 concerning the outbreak of the war and the enlistment of family members. In part: "...My dear Cousin I do think it is dreadful that our beloved country should be engaged in civil war but our country must and shall be preserved and I am glad to see the people respond so willingly to Lincoln's proclamation. Cousin Theodore Carpenter has enlisted. Willie wants to go badly but the Firm will not consent to his going...one of the firm is going as general. I do not believe that England or France will help the South or North...we are a nation large enough to fight our own battles, at any rate I hope so. Has...the rest of my friends enlisted?...". Minor stains, else very good.
