Autograph Letter Signed, “Geo. P. Wilcox” 2p. quarto, Canton, Ohio, July 13, 1862, addressed to George Lewis, and reads in part: “...I was taken prisoner near ‘Shiloh’ Church by 25 Texas Rangers, and sent before Generals Bragg & Beauregard, then to Corinth, Mobile, & Tuscaloosa. When I was placed in close compliments and kept then until we had eaten nearly all the bread & meat in that part of the state; when we were sent back to Mobile and thence to Montgomery. At that place I was released and came around by Atlanta, Chattanooga, Huntsville, to Nashville, & glad enough I assure you to get out of such a scrape. My friends had given me up as dead...I was at Fort Donelson and Randolph and saw Mr. James Woods...I passed you at Smithland as I learned from Maj. Cooke as you was on the city of Memphis...This unnatural war has ruined me, but I owe no one else a security debt in the world...” VG.
