Autograph Letter Signed by a Union soldier, 4p. octavo, pencil, August 29, 1862, and reads in part: “...We went up as far as City Point yesterday morn. and as we were passing it there was some Rebels in the woods and they fired at us but did not hit anybody. I was down in the cell sentery over a fellow that was in irons I did not see any of it. We fired about a half an hour, I heard the bullets flying over the boat. This was about ten or twelve o’clock and at one o’clock the Monitor came up and another gunboat and we shelled one of the prettiest cotteges I have seen on the river. We fired about 20 shots at it and smashed it most to pieces. I have had a good chance to see the Monitor, she got around and this boat had to pull her off. She fired four the prettiest shots I ever seen went right through it...The Monitor is in the same fleet with us there is five or six holes in her where the Merrimac hit her...” VG.
