War-date Union soldier's letter written in pencil by Quarter Master Sgt. John P. DeMerit, 29th Wisconsin, 2pp. 4to., "On the Cars about 50 ms north of Chicago", [Il.], Nov. 2, 1862. In part: "…We go to Chicago & take supper & take cars again for Cairo…I think from Cairo to Helena, Ark. & perhaps onward to Vicksburg…Our Regt. is in two trains each about twelve cars long and ours a little behind the other. I am in the hind car with the Col. & officers…" With DeMerit's postwar note on verso of letter, in which he pens "We began to open our eyes to the trials, dangers, excitement, foolishness & victory of soldier-life…".
