A good war-date Union soldier's letter written in ink by Quarter Master Sgt. John P. DeMerit, 29th Wisconsin, 2pp. folio, "On board steamboat Tecumseh about forty miles below, Helena, Ark.", Nov. 17, 1862, in part: "…Aside from two or three little foraging expeditions nothing has happened worth relating. These foraging parties only went out a few miles. They at first captured horses, mules, wagons & in fact everything they could put hands to but our superiors soon issued orders to forage upon nothing but hay, corn & oats, for fear we should hurt the Rebels I suppose! Our boys report that most of the plantations in the vicinity of our camp are deserted. One plantation about three miles from our camp has about two hundred acres of unpicked cotton on it and not a sign of the inhabitants in the vicinity…" With postwar note by DeMerit saying the letter was not finished or sent.
