A war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written in ink by Pvt. Charles E. Leland, Co. B, 13th Mass. Vols., Williamsport, Va., Jan. 9, 1862 concerning the battle of Hancock, Maryland, reading, in part: "…I presume that you have heard that there has been a fight in Hancock and what makes it so provoking, we left there three days before the fight…The 39th Illinois that were over the other side and whose pickets extended to Bath six miles inland, were driven back across the river and in this retreat one man was drowned. They tore up the track, and telegraph, and burned the Depot. They tried to shell Hancock, but did not do a great deal of injury in the town. Hancock is situated so that they could shell it very easy if they had the guns to do it with…". Charles E. Leland was sixteen when he enlisted in Co. B, 13th Massachusetts Volunteers in 1861. For nearly a year and half, he served faithfully. Then, during the battle of Gettysburg, he was shot in the lower abdomen and killed on July 1, 1863. VG
