War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. octavo, written in ink, by Pvt. James W. Foley, Co. K, 97th Pennsylvania Infantry, Camp Edisto, South Carolina, May 29, 1862, and reads in part: "...I am still at Edisto but under marching orders...3 companies of the regiment left here yesterday but I can't tell where they were going, I expect it will [be] down the river to take batteries...we have nothing to do but clean our guns...for guns we use the Springfield Rifle...". Foley served in the 97th until the end of 1863, but reenlisted in 1864 in the 28th Pennsylvania and participated in Sherman's March to the Sea. VG.
