A rare war-date Union cavalryman's letter written by Corp. George T. Crawford, Troop C, 5th U.S. Cavalry, 2p. quarto, Camp near Berlin, Indiana, July 17, 1863, and reads in part: "…I very luckily escaped the battle of Gettysburg, although our Regt. was engaged, and that too very hard, being dismounted and fighting on foot. Our squadron (Cos C & I) were detailed for picket at Emmittsburgh that day, and in that way, escaped, but I have been in every other cavalry engagement under Genl. Buford since then. I am in Merritt's Brigade, Buford's Division, of the cavalry corps, and the present commanding officer, of our company is 1st Lieut. Leicester Walker [bvt. major for Yellow Tavern], as brave, and fine officer as can be found in the Army of the Potomac…" VG. Crawford served throughout the war in the 5th and was killed during a bitter skirmish with rebel cavalry at Manassas Gap on July 21, 1863.
