Autograph Letter Signed, “J.W. Warner” taken POW at Middleburg, Virginia in June 1863, discharged in January 1864 and reenlisted with the 1st New Hampshire Cavalry, 3p. octavo, Camp Parole, Annapolis, August 14, 1863, with cover addressed to his father in New Hampshire, and reads in part: “...it is almost impossible to get money through in a letter. Some in the company have lost $20.00 in that way. IF you have not sent the money already send it by express without directing it to the camp. Direct it to J.W. Warner Troop M 1st R.I. Cavalry Annapolis Md....We dont hear much about exchange now...I suppose that most of the men in North Hampton will pay the $300 rather than come out here. It would suit the soldiers in the army full as well if all that were drafted were obliged to come....I dont think the drafted men will see much hard fighting unless they get into the field pretty soon for by what I have heard rebel soldiers say it would seem that the soldiers as well as citizens are fast losing confidence in their government and desire peace on any terms...” VG.
