A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written in ink by Pvt. Charles L. Hewitt, Co. E, 7th Conn. Vols., St. Helena Island, [S. C.], Oct. 21, 1863, reading, in part: "...We have four hours drill in boats - We are turned into boat infantry now. The boats go with paddles instead of oars. We drilled today for the first time. I don't know how I shall like it yet. It is going to be rather wet work getting in and out of the boats. I will write oftener than I did when we was on Morris Island...We get all the sweet potatoes, oranges, peanuts, fish and such things that we want every day and can send to the Head or Beaufort any day that we want to...we get passes to the Head once in a while...". Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover. Hewitt served throughout the war fighting at the battles of Fort Wagner, Olustee, Florida, Bermuda Hundred before he was discharged in late 1864. VG.
