A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written in ink by Pvt. Charles L. Hewitt, Co. E, 7th Conn. Vols., St. Helena Island, [S. C.], Nov. 8, 1863, reading, in part: "...We are not a going to move our camp there [Folly Island]. They let us come down here to change our clothes and wash. I don't know what they are keeping us there for - unless they want all the force that they have during the bombardment. They are bombarding Sumter, James Island, and Sullivans Island more or less everyday. This island is nearer Hilton Head than Beaufort, between the two...". Also included is the original transmittal cover. Hewitt served throughout the war fighting at the battles of Fort Wagner, Olustee, Florida, Bermuda Hundred before he was discharged in late 1864. VG.
