A good war-date KIA Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written in pencil by Pvt. Richard K. Lunt, Co. A, 48th Mass. Vols., pencil, On board the Constellation, Feb. 1, 1863. In part: "…We have had a pretty hard time coming from Fortress Monroe. We have had 6 die on our passage (1 of Co. B 1 of C 1 of D 1 of E 2 of H) and a great many sick…we went up the river we had a gay time. We passed plantation they did look well. On each plantation is about 30 buildings…and then the planter house in front of them, a very handsome house…we passed along some huts were they would come out and wave their Hdkfs to us and the young ones would have to have a piece of white string to wave at us and they did show their teeth good. We passed along one house where there were a lot of oranges and a white man was leaning on the gate, the boys ask him to throw them an orange on board, he said that he did not give them to Yankees, but we had sport with the niggers going up the [Mississippi] river…". Lunt enlisted in the 48th Mass. in Sept. 1862 and fought at the battle of Plains Store, La. and at the Port Hudson where he was killed in action on June 14, 1863. VG.
