A nice war-date Union soldier's letter written by Sgt. Jordan C. Harriss, Co. A, 81st Illinois Vols., 4p. octavo, Vicksburg, Mississippi, December 20, 1863, and reads in part: "…Almost every face I can see now in the Regt gives strong evidence of health & cheerfulness of its possessor…We begin to think that we will stay here all winter because of an order by Gen. McPherson. No Co. is allowed to be formed into squads for cooking & eating consequently our Co. all eats at the same table together. Sometimes we have tolerably good meals & sometimes we have only bread & coffee. We have four 'Darkies' who are mustered in the service as undercooks to cook for us…I also hope that we may have another joyful meeting on this earth when to the war we'll not have to return…" VG. Harriss was captured with a majority of his regiment at Guntown, Miss. on June 10, 1864 and sent to Andersonville prison. After his exchange, he was mustered out with his regiment at the end of the war.
