A good war-date Union soldier's letter written by Sgt. Jordan C. Harriss, Co. A, 81st Illinois Vols., 4p. folio, Vicksburg, Mississippi, January 21, 1864, with cover, and reads in part: "…The man we lost in our last expedition got back safely today with a Parole in his pocket, which was given in such a manner that I think no attention will be paid to it…I feel sure if I die the death of the righteous that I shall see my Dear Christian companion in that Blessed Abode I was sorry to hear that you all had to suffer so much with cold. We have felt disagreeable very little here with cold I thought when I heard of your sleeping so cold that I would have liked to have been with you to have warmed you up…" VG. Harriss was captured with a majority of his regiment at Guntown, Miss. on June 10, 1864 and sent to Andersonville prison. After his exchange, he was mustered out with his regiment at the end of the war.
