War-date Union soldier's letter written by Sgt. Jordan C. Harriss & Pvt. Orson Thornton, his brother-in-law, KIA on June 10, 1864 at Guntown, Mississippi, Co. A, 81st Illinois Vols., 4p. octavo, Vicksburg, Mississippi, February 5, 1864, with cover, in part: "…It was reported that the troops who left here a day or two ago were fighting yesterday at Champion's Hill. If true I suppose it was only a small body of Cavalry who were easily dispersed but you may expect some interesting news from them before many weeks…[with additional page by Orson Thornton]…there is a great expedition up at present there was about 60 or 70 thousand troops left here day before yesterday and they was going to Jackson in this state and probably from there to Mobile and take that place and if they do take it, it will be a great help to the Union cause. Well our brigade went with them but we was lucky this time the 81st did not go…" VG. Harriss was captured with a majority of his regiment at Guntown, Miss. on June 10, 1864 and sent to Andersonville prison. After his exchange, he was mustered out with his regiment at the end of the war.
