Group of four War-date soldier's Autograph Letters Signed by Orson Thornton, 81st Illinois Infantry, KIA on June 10, 1864 at Guntown, Mississippi, with the first addressed to comrade in arms Jordan Carroll Harris who served with Thornton in the 81st Illinois, includes: ALS, 3p. octavo, September 12, 1862, on patriotic stationery with cover bearing an American Flag cachet, and reads in part: "…I would like to see you and the rest of the boys I would like to be with you and if I had of been at town when you left I would have went…the boys are nearly all gone to the Army…" VG…plus; ALS, 4p. octavo, Vicksburg, Mississippi, January 18, 1864, and reads in part: "…when we got here they was just ready to start on an expedition and I took my gun and went with them….I was at a Catholic meeting this morning and of all the capers and foolishness I never saw it looked to me like a poor way to serve the Lord…I want you all to pray for me that I may hold out faithful for there is a great many temptations in a camp life thought I am determined to withstand the temptations…" VG…plus; ALS, 2p. octavo, Vicksburg, Mississippi, January 20, 1864, and reads in part: "…Richard Wilkes he is on the mend, sister, Carroll and me have had some good times already…when e got here the boys was all ready to start on an expedition and they got me a gun and rigging and I went with them and we went about 100 miles up the river but we did not have any skirmish…" VG…plus; ALS, 1p. octavo, Vicksburg, February 26, 1864, and reads in part: "…we was on the foraging expedition and we got back last Sunday evening and to my joy there was letters from you…We are all well at present Carroll he is fixing around like a bee…".
