War-date Union soldier's letter written by Sgt. James S. Stratton," 12th New Jersey Infantry, KIA at Ream's Station on August 25, 1864, 2p. octavo, on St. Charles Hotel stationary, [mid June] 1863, and reads in part: "… I first went to see Stanton's Office about 11 oclock to day and was fortunate enough to meet him in the door. I handed my letter to his messenger to take in and the Sec. at once ordered Genl. Canby to write on the letter 'To be granted by order of Sec. War' Well I will now try to get down tomorrow and think I shall have two men from Rochester N. York to accompany me, as they are going to the same hospital. Immediately upon my arrival I will telegraph to you how [Pvt.] Edward [Stratton, WIA at Chancellorsville & right leg amputated] is and suppose this letter and the pass & dispatch will reach you on Tuesday. I would be glad to know that Edward was improving so that we could soon bring him away from Virginia. There are various, or at least have been various rumors of Hooker's Army again crossing the Rappahannock, but I don't think there is much truth in the rumor although a Capt. just from there says the 6th Army Corps is already over…" Fine.
