Autograph Letter Signed, “R.S. Motte”, who served with the 1st Delaware Infantry before being made major in the 13th Regular Army, 1-1/4p. quarto, Newport Bks. Kentucky, January 21, 1863 [in error, it was actually 1864], addressed to Lt. M.C. Green in Philadelphia, and reads in part: “...One of the 1st Class musicians did not come on, and I presume has deserted. I have received several private letters from the Battalion lately & as I presume you would like to hear of it will give you briefly the status of affairs. They were in the fight at Vicksburg under fire several hours, and behaved admirably, with a loss of but 3 killed & fifteen wounded. The smallness of our loss was owing to the excellent corn they found among some felled trees. They also participate in the taking of Arkansas Post, where tehy were under fire for two hours, about the same loss as at Vicksburg. Gen. Sherman is very much pleased with them & says he will take the Battalion with him wherever he goes, that they are as brave men and good troops as he ever saw. Capt. Smith has returned here with a piece of shell located somewhere in his shin bone, interfering materially with his locomotion...” Fine.
