War-date Autograph Letter Signed “Frank Brown” 87th Indiana Infantry, who were heavily engaged at Chickamauga, 4p. octavo, “In the field near Marietta, Georgia,” June 30, 1864, and reads in part: “...I will write a few lines to enlighten your mind in regard to matters & things in the ‘Sunny South’ - too sunny! The weather has changed from constant rain to oppressive heat in fact it is hot! We are still at work at the Rebs working around and closer on to them. We have crowded our works so close to them in some places that we can easily throw stones into each others works, and black guard each other but it stands as man in hand to keep his head down or like enough away goes the top of it and a man is not of much account after half of his head is gone. They gave me a slight caution the other day by shooting a hole through my hat! I hardly think the hat will recover but as long as they leave me with a whole hide I won’t complain....we were (that is our Brigade) on the front under fire for over four weeks fighting and building breastworks and two thirds of the work done in the night. I tell you we are getting tired of this long pull and want to see it wound up so we can get a chance to rest and clean up...I attended a very lively ball of another kind in fact if he had been here he would have thought that there was quite a number of Balls we threw up works withing two hundred yards of the enemy’s works in an open field and I assure you that there was some lively digging done on that occassion to make a cover....There is all kind of rumors afloat in regard to a movement to be made two or three corps ours among the rest some say Atlanta and some say Knoxville but I am not going to say where but it is evident that there is some important movement about to come off soon and I have confidence to think that Sherman, Thomas & Col. will bring it out all right, but I am in hopes that they will send us around to beat the Rebs into Atlanta. I think they can spare three corps from here for that purpose now that e have got the lines drawn and strongly fortified and then I think we would have a fine thing on them...” Fine.
