War-date Autograph Letter Signed “Frank Brown,” 87th Indiana Infantry, who were heavily engaged at Chickamauga, 4p. octavo, “Marietta, Ga.” July 10, 1864, and reads in part: “...patience is one of the traits of my character but I say unto you that when the mail comes day after day and still no letter for Frank I am afraid I sometimes get almost out of patience and use expressions of more force than politeness...I have not recd a letter in over a week and its seems a great deal longer in the Army so you cna judge of the state of my mind and I have written quite a number in the time...We have been in Marietta six days and you can form no idea of the change in the places in that short time. When we came here the town was almost unoccupied all there was here was one Regt. the 25th Iowa which we relieved anda few citizens. Now the cars are running in here all hours of the day and night hospitals established for the sick and wounded of all our Army Sutler Shops by the dozen, bakeries, news depots, post office and in fact every building and dwelling house is being occupied and I am afraid there will [be] lack of room soon. There was twelve hundred women & children brought in from a small town at the front yesterday and I understand that there is about as many more to come today. The town was a factory town and was burned but by who I did not leanr I forget the name of the place...Say! Sis when I get my green backs & sof clothes I think I had better cultivate the acquaintances of some of the Nice Girls of this city just to get my hand in a little, I am afraid if I do not practice a little that I will not pass among the Dry Goods when I get in ‘God’s Country.’...” Fine.
