A great Missouri citizen's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by a certain James Cooper, Winthrop, Missouri, Oct. 27, 1864 on events in Missouri as Confederate Gen. Sterling Price raided the state for the last time in 1864, reading, in part: "…I am working for the P. C. R. R. Co. opposite Atchison, Kansas, Chickering Freight. I have been acting freight agent for the past four weeks as the agent has gone east…I presume you have heard of the trouble in this state…the Rebel Gen. Price came into the state with about 35000 men and destroyed considerable property…now he is going south…yesterday he had a fight and lost in prisoners 3 of his generals and 1500 of his men. They had a fight a few days ago about 15 miles below here. They captured and burned the steam boat West Wind the one I run 2nd clerk on last spring. I was lucky in not being on her at the time for all the crew are prisoners yet…you wanted to know how Little Mack would run out this way. I think he will sweep this state clean if they don't gouge him any as that has always been their game they may try it this fall again. If they do they may beat him for McClellan men have too much principle to try to gain an unjust victory…almost every one in the state has been called out to do militia duty for the last four weeks except your humble servant…I have been expecting it every day…we had no draft in this part of the state…as our quota has been filled…". Fine.
