Autograph Letter Signed, “S.H. Mott” 4p. octavo, on “Pacifi Mills” embossed lettersheet, Laurel Hill, September 19, 1864, with fine cover to A.L. Mott in New Jersey, bearing a Sonora, California cds and “PAID’ cancellation, reads in part: “...by the tone of your letter I should judge that the draft was creating the greatest excitement with you. Well, I suppose it is nip & tuck with you. There is but little said about drafting here at present, but about a year ago there was not a little excitement among some of the Secesh so much so that it caused a number to leave the state for Nevada Ty. but they find they can’t do just as they have a mind to there, but they will endure most anything rather than face the draft....I went to Sonora on the last fourth...spent the day on the Dunn Ranch in the harvest field so we had no opportunity of examining any chinawear on that day...Ben & I are keeping old back with another hombre we prospect a little, and hunt a little, we lounge a little & loaf a little. We are waiting with all patience for the rains and then I think we will have to pick in and try to make up for lost time...” Fine.
