War-date Autograph Letter Signed, “Fredk. MacCrellish Editor and Proprietor ‘Alta California’ San Francisco, California, 2p. quarto, Washington, D.C., December 12, 1864, addressed to General Patterson, it reads in part: “...I called on you a few days since to see my nephew Jas. A Hutton [2nd New Hampshire Infantry] a Sergt in yoru regiment. On my return here I asked my personal friend Genl. W.S. Hancock to get a commision in his new first corps for my nephew, which he will do. He dictated the form of application a copy of which I send enclosed to my newphew. The Genl. said it would help Sergt. Hutton if you would endorse on his application a few words of recommendation for the boy, which if you will do I shall be greatly obliged. I am very anxious to have him get a commission and shall feel deeply indebted for any assistance you can give him...” VG. Docketed on verso by General Patterson.
