A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written in ink by Pvt. Charles L. Hewitt, Co. E, 7th Conn. Vols., Gloucester Point, Va., May 2, 1864, reading, in part: "...I should have answered it [a letter] before, but have been very busy scouting the country round here for deserters. We catched some of them. We was reviewed by Gen. Butler day before yesterday... I suppose they intend to take Richmond, for they are getting a large number of men in Virginia, and I suppose we shall have to help. You think work will go rather hard with us, but I think I could settle down to work with a good heart. I shouldn't hate work enough to go into the army again, not by a long shot! Can you find Yorktown on the map? If you can, Gloucester Point is right straight across the river...". Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover. Hewitt served throughout the war fighting at the battles of Fort Wagner, Olustee, Florida, Bermuda Hundred before he was discharged in late 1864. VG.
