A nice war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Charles L. Hewitt, Co. E, 7th Conn. Vols., Bermuda Hundred, Va., June 10, 1864 concerning supporting cavalry units while they raided to with three mile of Petersburg, reading, in part: "…Part of the 10 Army Corps has gone into Grant's Army under Gen. Smith of the 18th Corps and I think that part of our letters go there before we get them, if they are directed to the Corps….We went on a raid yesterday to within 3 miles of Petersburg. We went to support the cavalry and give them a chance to get out and cut the railroads…our regiment lost one killed and two wounded, our Co. none. George Andrews of our Co. is all right, but a George Andrews of Co. C was killed…we have a little shelling once in a while. When the rebs open you will see the boys starting for their bombproofs like so many woodchucks running for their holes…". Hewitt served throughout the war fighting at the battles of Fort Wagner, Olustee, Florida, Bermuda Hundred before he was discharged in late 1864.
