The 7th Conn. Suffers Heavily at The Battle of Deep Bottom Run

A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Charles L. Hewitt, Co. E, 7th Conn. Vols., Bermuda Hundred, [Va.], Aug. 21, 1864 concerning a three day battle at Deep Bottom Run, reading, in part: "…We arrived in camp last night from a kind of raid to Deep Run. We was gone just a week. Our brigade was in one pretty severe fight in that time, and skirmishing more or less everyday. What good has it done I cant tell. There was two corps went, our corps, the 10th and the 2nd. We took some artillery and some prisoners, how many I have no means of knowing. We are back in our old quarters with the loss in our Co. of 1 Lieut. Killed [Charles E. Baker], 1 Lieut. Wounded, and 1 corp. wounded. The regiments loss was 31 wounded, 7 killed, and 4 missing - 42 in all. I guess us old fellows have seen our last battle…There is rumors about victories around Petersburg, whether there is anything in it or not I have no means of knowing…There is heavy firing in the direction of Petersburg as I write. I hope it means success to our armies, for I want to see this was closed, if I have not got to take part in it much longer…". Also included is the original transmittal cover without stamp. Hewitt served throughout the war fighting at the battles of Fort Wagner, Olustee, Florida, Bermuda Hundred before he was discharged in late 1864.
