War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written in ink by Musician [Osborn] Frank Richardson, Co. F, 16th Maine Vols., Weldon R. R., Va., Sept. 18, 1864. In part: "...Funston came from Wash. last week and he thinks the paymaster will be here soon. I have two chances to lead bands, but do not think I shall accept. Our Brig has moved into one of the new forts on the Weldon RR and probably will remain some little time in the foot...one officer that was wounded in the Wilderness returned last night, it is Lt. Isaac Thompson of North Anson Me. Capt. [S. Clifford] Belcher [Co. G, 16th Maine] has resigned…it is now getting the last of the month and the troops are not paid, many a family is suffering at home for the want of their husbands money, is it not too badly to use the soldier so?...". Signed Frank Richardson while research definitively proves that our soldier is Osborn Richardson who served throughout the war in the 16th Maine fighting at Antietam, Gettysburg, and the Wilderness.
